Your identity is a crucial part of distinguishing yourself amongst fellow designers fighting for jobs in the concrete jungle. There are many people who share similar views, have a comparable work ethic and will work as hard as the next person. How you can stand out amongst them is what becomes the biggest challenge.
“Defining your place in the world can be surprisingly complex. You might apply for several art director positions, only to find that this title means different things at different companies. Each one puts their own spin on how much experience and what talents and skills the position demands.”
Sara Eisenman, Building Design Portfolios
One of the ways to achieve a unique personal identity is through creating a brand for oneself. This starts with a cleverly designed logo that speaks directly to the designer’s personality. There are many great examples of successful logos besides the ones that are the face of big name companies. Designers use logos as a way to express their brand and are a way to be remembered by clients or potential employers.
The best way to create a logo is through creating sketches. There is no number of “minimum” sketches that should be made; in fact the more sketches the better. This allows for ideas to be fleshed out and new ones to form through experimentation. It is also not necessary for the logo to be initials or the name of the designer. In fact, there are many examples of successful logos that do not have any letters in the design.
Creating a logo should be fun and is extremely essential to determining the identity of an individual. Take the time to sketch many ideas and don’t be afraid to experiment deeper into ideas that will undoubtedly start to form.
